Harley XLH Sportster Gasoline Tank
Life's a bitch... Thank God there's Harleys...
On 16 April 2008 we started to strip our Harley XLH Ironhead Sportster. Here you see the underside of the Sportster gas tank after removal from the bike, and prior to cleaning.
Here you see the bottom of the fuel tank.
As you can see, the fuel valve can be mounted in two positions.
Here the fueltank is still on the bike.
We were not sure what we are going to find underneath the paint of this 35 year old
Sportster fueltank, but that cracked paint was not very promising...
Once we had the gastank off, we immediately chipped away the paint at the front end where we had spotted the cracks,
and much to our relief we discovered just plain and undamaged blue steel with some rusty spots underneath
a 1/4" thick layer of filler.
